Michael Been was born on 17 March 1950 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA. He was an actor and composer, known for Real Genius (1985), Tango & Cash (1989) and The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). He died on 19 August 2010 in Hasselt, Flanders, Belgium.- Whoever thinks of Flemish actor Johny Voners, a pseudonym of Johny Hoebrechts, probably remembers unmotivated sergeant, disaster of a goalkeeper and drunk harlequin Xavier who needs even less introduction than the sitcom. A dishonor to Voners, whose massive career began in the 1960s. A jack of all trades, at a young age Voners co-starred in youth-targeting whodunit Axel Nort (1966), as detective Dirk Talboom. In 'Axel Nort', he served as a sidekick to Nand Buyl, one of his mentors at the drama school he attended, Royal Conservatory Brussels. He denounced bureaucracy in comedy show De collega's (1978) as sub-head of the Finance Department Thierry De Vucht. In later years, he became active as a singer notably covering French-Armenian singer-songwriter Charles Aznavour's repertoire with Voners' distinctive voice range resembling that of Aznavour. He was previously married to Anne-Mie Volders and Janine Bischops. He was the first main cast member of the long-running sitcom F.C. De Kampioenen (1990) to pass away. Voners died from skin cancer at the age of 74, on March 17, 2020 in Waregem, Flanders, Belgium.

Often cited as one of the greatest animators of all time, Vladimir 'Bill' Tytla was born of Ukrainian immigrant parentage in Yonkers, New York, in October 1904. His close-knit family strongly supported his artistic inclinations. By the tender age of nine he had become set on his course after attending a screening of Gertie the Dinosaur (1914) (a creation by America's first successful pioneer animator, Winsor McCay, filmed for use in his vaudeville act). Emotionally volatile and prone to truancy, Tytla studied briefly at the New York Evening School of Industrial Design but yearned for work in his chosen field. In 1920, he was hired to write title cards for Paramount animations, at six days a week for $1.50 a day. His prodigious output earned him the nickname "Tytla the Titler". His first gigs as animator were on Mutt & Jeff cartoons for the Barré-Bowers Studio in the Bronx and for Paul Terry in Greenwich Village, bringing to life 'Aesop's Fables'. Dissatisfied with the poor standard of animation at 'Terrytoons', Tytla traveled abroad in 1928 and spent eighteen months in Europe touring countless museums and galleries and attending art classes. He studied sculpture (under the French master Charles Despiau) and painting (significantly influenced by the works of Dutch renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder). He returned to New York with more strings to his bow and immediately slotted in to his old job as a more accomplished and sophisticated animator. A colleague, Art Babbitt, became one of his closest friends. When Babbitt joined the Disney Organisation in 1932, he urged Tytla to follow. Two years later, Tytla traded in his job security at 'Terrytoons', moved to the West Coast to join Disney as a bona fide animator, albeit at a reduced salary. Before long, Tytla gained a reputation as one of the fastest and best draftsmen in the business. Over time, he acquired a new, rather more complimentary, sobriquet as "The Michelangelo of Animation".
One of Tytla's great strengths was an intuitive flair for character animation and for imbuing his creations with feeling. There was also a three dimensional quality to his work, very much the product of his new-found expertise in sculpture. As chief animator of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), he created both Doc and Grumpy. He also brought to life the villainous puppet master Stromboli in Pinocchio (1940), the monstrous demon Chernabog in Fantasia (1940), the delightful Jose Carioca and Pedro the Mail Plane in Saludos Amigos (1942), and, perhaps most memorably, the baby elephant Dumbo (1941) (plus his assorted fellow pachyderms). Had it not been for joining a strike action (led by his friend Babbitt) by 300 members of the Cartoonists Guild in support of better wages and film credits for assistants and production staff, Tytla may have seen out his career at Disney. As it turned out, the strike led to bitter acrimony between management and union supporters. Babbitt was fired in 1941, having incurred Walt Disney's lasting wrath. Following a lengthy legal case, he was briefly reinstated for a year. Like Babbitt, Tytla began to feel uncomfortable in this divisive environment and left the company in 1943. He was later to regret that decision. Back at his old stomping grounds at 'Terrytoons' and Paramount, he became more and more dissatisfied with modernist trends and methodologies in animation, plus lower-than-ever standards. This added to the law of diminishing returns in his own work. By the 1950's, Tytla was working on television commercials for Tempo Productions in New York's 'Animation Alley'. He briefly headed his own production company by the end of the decade, but business acumen had never been his forte and the venture failed. The last few years of his life were marred by ill-health, including blindness in his left eye. He died on his Connecticut dairy farm in December 1968. Tytla's contributions to animation were indelible. In his own words, the key ingredient being "the feeling and vitality you get into the work".- Actor

Gaston Berghmans, quite possibly Belgium's greatest comedian of all time, was born in 1926 in Merksem, a community which is part of the city of Antwerp. He had a very normal and healthy childhood and attended middle school to become a craftsman, just like his father before him.
Right before the Second World War, Gaston had been starring in some local plays in his off-time, and decided to become a professional comedian during the War, quitting his job as a handyman on ships in the port of Antwerp. In this period in his life, he met up with some guardian angels that would procure his future in the entertainment industry.
Later, he met up with Leo Martin, also born in Antwerp, but raised in Brussels. Together they formed the legendary comedy duo 'Gaston & Leo', that toured around theaters all over the country and made TV appearances with hilarious sketches. They also made some features movies including _"Zware jongens" (1984)_, _"De Paniekzaaiers" (1986)_ and _"Gaston en Leo in Hong Kong" (1988)_. Their last big thing together was a Sunday evening sketch show called _"Gaston & Leo Show" (1989)_, which aired from 1989 until 1993, when Leo died of cancer. When asked about this period later in his life, Gaston said that he felt like he had died along with his friend.
After losing Leo, Gaston starred in his own television show (_"Gaston Berghmans Show" (1994)_) for a few years, but he realized that things would never be the same again. After retiring from sketch comedy television in 2000, he only made a limited number of on-screen appearances, mostly in shows that tributed him. In 2008, he ended his acting career in the way he wanted to, with a large dramatic movie part in _"Christmas in Paris" (2008)_. That picture however flopped, making people demand him to get into another final project. Gaston kept refusing this, saying his health did not longer allow him to do so. After years of physical ups and downs, he eventually passed away on May 21, 2016 in a rest-home in Schoten, surrounded by his family.- Denise Zimmerman was born on 6 June 1943 in Borgerhout, Flanders, Belgium. Born on November 2, 1924 as Leon De Waegenaere in the town of Berchem near Antwerp, young Leo soon developed a great interest for music throughout his childhood, especially the clarinet. Throughout his early career, he excelled in musical performances mixed with subtle touches of humor and even short sketches done in between songs. In the late sixties however, he came into contact with Gaston Berghmans, with whom he formed the immortal and inseparable comedy duo "Gaston & Leo" in 1972.
After mostly performing in local theaters all over Belgium, Gaston and Leo signed a exclusivity contract with commercial TV station VTM when it first started up in February of 1989.
The last show the duo hosted was "De Gaston & Leo Show", airing from 1992 to 1993. Leo Martin suddenly passed away on March 18, 1993 of lung cancer. After his untimely death, his partner Gaston revealed he had always considered Leo the brother he never had and "a piece of me has died along with him and will never come back".
With his great big brown mustache and resounding bass voice, Leo will always be remembered by Flemish television viewers and theater aficionados alike.- Donald Madder was born on 30 May 1969 in Antwerpen, Flanders, Belgium.
